Ikigai is the thing worth getting up for.

In Japanese, ikigai names the reason you get out of bed — found where four things overlap: what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.

It is not a growth strategy. It's a test we apply to the work: if a project sits in the middle of all four, we build it. If it only satisfies one, we let it go.

How we build

Four habits, held to stubbornly.

Precise over breezy

“Concentration: 2.50 mg/mL,” not “You're all set!” Numbers lead, copy gets out of the way, and nothing is dressed up as more certain than it is.

Describe, don't prescribe

We surface what the data shows and stop there. The protocol is the user's. The decision stays theirs.

Private by default

Data lives on the device unless there's a real reason for it to leave. Never sold, never handed to advertisers or analytics.

Finished, then tended

We ship small and maintain it for years. A feature has to earn its place against the cost of the complexity it adds.

I started Ikigai Software Development to build the kind of software I want to use: quiet, exact, and honest about its limits. One person, a short list of products, no roadmap written to impress anyone.

Caliper came out of that. People managing a real protocol were doing vial arithmetic in their heads and keeping doses in a notes app, and the tools on offer either shouted at them or tried to be their doctor. Caliper is the third option — a well-made instrument on the bench that measures accurately and then gets out of the way.

That's the whole reason for being. If it isn't worth doing carefully, we don't do it.
